Blue Grace

In 1991, I set off aboard
Blue Grace, my 37 foot
Benetaeau to tour the east
coast of the united States
and the Bahamas while
teaching sailing. The voyage
lasted almost one year
and led to some great
adventures.
Here’s some of the story.

Blue Grace
Cumberland Island, Georgia. November 1991.

“ Tonight, as that which always happens when the full moon rises and Blue Grace is anchored, the beauty of the calls from egrets and other marsh birds coupled with the soft winds and sounds of water, gently beating against the hull, so relaxes and enchants me.

Now, an Owl... I am alone with my feelings.

It brings me to recall moments spent in the country, for again, an owl calls. The air is fresh, winds cool and not quite brisk. My mother and father used to take me to Vergennes, outside Burlington, Vermont for 3 weeks each summer. There, the cool breezes would rustle through the pine trees and my father taught me how to throw horseshoes. This evening, nearly thirty years later, I am sitting on the deck listening to dolphins arch through the water and take a breath."

In the summer of 1991, I set sail aboard Blue Grace to achieve a dream of sailing the entire coast of the eastern United States and then over to The Bahamas by chartering my sailboat and teaching sailing to guests along the way. The adventure took almost seven months and found us visiting the Hudson River, the Cheaspeake Bay, Albemarle Sound, Pamlico Sound, the Georgia Out Islands, the coast of Florida and then over to Grand Bahama Island, where we sailed and cru sed for three months.

We are in the process of writing a book about these travels and the opening lines to the book are;

To my mother, Grace Rita Cadieux, who would have come along without giving it a seconds thought. With much love and thanks for teaching me to be such a free spirit.

In the fall of 1987, I bought Blue Grace with this intention after spending a year in the French West Indies.

The boat, as it was, was perfect. Exactly what I was looking for. Impulsively, I said, “I’ll buy it”. The rest it what makes up this story. The name was easy. " Grace" was my mothers name, and as she was and still is so close to me, that name was the simple part.

“Blue” came from the water and it’s deep, inviting, relaxing color. It made for a very fitting name.
