Ocean’s Edge
In 1999, Yim and I visited Belize to scuba dive and relax.
After a couple of weeks there, we visited a local bar for a tropical drink and met a fellow who was
a real estate agent and began chatting. After a couple of drinks, he had me interested in a
potential piece of property a few miles up the coast and by the time we left Belize, we have
basically bought a little over an acre of Belizean beachfront with the plans of building our own
small resort.
It wasn’t a complete spontaneous moment as I had been scoping out Belizean Real Estate for
at least three years before visiting and had a pretty good idea that I could pick up a decent piece
of property affordably and build a small eco-resort. I had neglected to mention that to Yim.
Over the next 18 months, we set about clearing the property and designing and building two
houses and a workman’s house/workshop on the property, built a small web site and booked
the houses for six months before the houses were even completed.
We packed up our stuff on Vancouver Island and planned our move.
One week before leaving, Hurricane Iris devastated the Placencia Peninsula and tore the roof off
our home and upon arriving, we were forced to find a job and took one managing The Inn at
Robert’s Grove while we re-built our small property.
However, the project of purchasing and designing the property we called Ocean’s Edge was a
very enjoyable experience for me. We planned the property layout, met with builders, contracted
out the work, oversaw the construction of the houses and set about clearing and landscaping
the property over the next three years until we chose to sell.
Above are a few of the photos taken during the process.

Building along the coast of

very memorable.
Here’s some of the story.
